Things to do in Galle

Galle Lighthouse

Galle Lighthouse is located within the historic Galle Fort in Sri Lanka and is one of just 14 remaining lighthouses in the country. In fact, this is Sri Lanka's oldest light station and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The original structure was built in 1848 but was destroyed in a fire in the 1930s. The current lighthouse was built 100 meters away from the original site upon ramparts standing six meters above ground level. The light station itself is just over 26 meters tall, giving it a panoramic view of the harbour. The Galle Fort lighthouse overlooks a small beach, and there are a number of shops and restaurants nearby.

Heritage Walk Through Galle Fort

Galle Fort is undoubtedly the city's prime attraction. It's large, 130 acres to be precise, and the most enjoyable way of exploring it is to wander about on foot. In fact, this is one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka. For curious travellers who aren't content with simply getting lost in the fort's lanes, Galle Fort Walks conducts personalized guided tours that provide a fascinating insight into its history. There are two options to choose from Standard or Extended. The standard 90-minute tour covers all the architectural and cultural highlights, tailored to suit guest interests. The extended 150-minute tour goes into detail about colonization in Sri Lanka and its impact. End the day with a magical sunset walk along the fort's ramparts.

Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna is the next stop! This small town is around a 15-minute drive from Galle and is the first in a series of beach hopping trips – think of it as a pub crawl, but with beaches instead of pubs! The waters at Unawatuna Beach are perfect for a brief soak after a long walk at Galle Fort. Grab a sunbed, order a meal from our restaurant one of the best beachfront eateries, and unwind with a nice cool beer! Don't forget to try, freshly caught seafood at a restaurant.

Wijaya Beach

Return to the road for another ten minutes to reach Wijaya Beach, which is only two kilometres away. If you arrive before sundown, you'll be able to see the Instagram-famous beach swing that's been making the rounds on social media. Before proceeding on to your final destination, hop on for a quick snapshot. The beach is extremely safe for swimming since the reef creates a shallow natural pool that functions as a natural barrier against heavy waves. It's also ideal for someone who isn't a skilled swimmer.

The Beach by the Jungle

Sandwiched between the sea and the jungle is a slice of paradise. We’re talking about Jungle Beach, a small but beautiful stretch of sand tucked between the Unawatuna and Galle beaches. Jungle Beach is situated in a bay, which makes it an excellent spot for a good swim. Getting to the beach requires a short trek through the jungle. Once you arrive at the beach, there’s a small shack serving food, cocktails, and other drinks. Conveniently, there are sunbeds set up along the beach so you could both get tans while sipping on arrack sours.

Watersport Fun

From jet ski races to fun tube rides, while you both scream out in sheer excitement, Bentota River is most famous as a water sports destination. There are a variety of activities for couples to enjoy and partake in as most hotels idyllically located along the river bank have these on offer.

Galle International Cricket Stadium

Known to cricket enthusiasts as one of the luckiest grounds for Sri Lanka’s national team, the Galle International Stadium covers over four hectares and is considered to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. The grounds favour spin bowling, which is thought to be a speciality of the Sri Lankan team.

Japanese Peace Pagoda

In 1947, a Japanese Buddhist monk by the name of Nichidatsu Fujii dedicated his life to constructing Peace Pagodas around the world as symbols of peace. More than 80 Peace Pagodas have been built all over the world including in Europe, Asia and the United States.
